Afifa Hashimi

Associate

Afifa (she/her/hers) practices in all areas of labour, employment, human rights, regulatory and administrative law. She articled with us at Moore Edgar Lyster LLP, and joined us as an associate when she was called to the bar.

While in law school, Afifa completed co-op work terms at West Coast LEAF and in-house at a large BC union. In her summer prior to law school, she worked for the Migrant Workers Centre as a community outreach coordinator. These experiences reinforced her interest in human rights and advocating on behalf of workers and unions.

Afifa was also an active member of her law school community. She served as the UVic Law Students’ Society Equity Representative and held leadership roles in the Feminist Law Students’ Association, the Racialized Law Students Collective, and the Labour Law Club. Afifa also strengthened her advocacy skills as a participant in the 2020 BC Law Schools Competitive Moot, which her team won.

Afifa has engaged in advocacy, public legal education, research, and writing volunteer work through several public interest organizations, with a focus on human rights, and racial and gender justice. She is the recipient of the Canadian Bar Association’s 2024 Douglas Miller Rising Star Award.

Afifa is currently a Co-Chair of the Human Rights Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association - BC Branch (CBABC), an Executive of the South Asian Legal Clinic of BC (SALCBC) board, and a member of the Canadian Association of Labour Lawyers BIPOC Committee. She has also served as a director and a Vice President of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (British Columbia) Society (FACL BC), and is an associate producer of the organization’s 2021 documentary about discrimination. Outside of work, Afifa enjoys art and poetry.
